Removr partners with CO2 storage leader Carbfix for its first industrial Direct Air Capture pilot in Iceland

Oslo, 16th of August 2022

Removr, a Norwegian company that develops solutions for removing CO2 directly from the atmosphere, has entered into an MoU with CO2 storage leader Carbfix.

The partners aim to co-develop a demonstration project for a Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility in Iceland with a minimum capacity of 300 tons CO2 per year to come on stream in 2023. As part of the MoU, the partners have also decided to explore the potential for co-developing a large-scale DAC plant in Iceland.

“Delivering our first industrial DAC pilot will be an important milestone towards our ambition of developing the world’s first solid sorbent 1-million-ton plant in 2027. We are working on possible locations for the pilot in Iceland which has one of the world’s most attractive framework conditions for our industry, with all necessary regulations in place, access to clean energy and storage, and a highly competent ecosystem,”

said Einar Tyssen, CEO of Removr.

Carbfix, the world’s first mineral storage operator, has developed a solution that turns CO2 into stone in less than two years enabled by high reactivity in the basaltic formations in Iceland, with the company’s operational track-record stretching back to 2012. Carbfix has already been awarded two large EU grants from the European Innovation Fund for Project Silverstone, to implement full scale CCS at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant, and Coda Terminal, a CO2 transport and storage hub at Straumsvík, Iceland.

“This makes us confident that we have secured the best possible partner for our first project,”

added Mr. Tyssen.

Removr’s technology is based on zeolites that capture CO2 molecules in microporous pellets, which has been used for decades in the space and petroleum industry, and its application to DAC has been proven through four successful small-scale pilots since 2016. The company follows a stepwise verification process in developing an industrial scaled up DAC farm.

“We are excited to welcome Removr as one of the first companies to deploy in our DAC Innovation Park in Iceland. It will be an important step to accelerate the development of new emerging DAC technologies and to demonstrate the direct air capture and storage chain in the relevant environment,”

says Edda Sif Pind Aradóttir, CEO of Carbfix.

It is widely accepted that CO2 removal will be essential for the world to reach ambitious and necessary climate targets. DAC is one of the promising negative emission technologies (NET), and one of few proven technology options available to remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere. The CO2 from DAC can be permanently stored in deep geological formations, thereby achieving negative emissions which can be sold as removal credits. Scenarios made by IPCC and McKinsey conclude that there is a significant need for negative emissions in the gigaton range to achieve the 1.5-degree climate target.

About Carbfix

Carbfix is the world’s first CO2 mineral storage operator, having mineralized 80 thousand tons of CO2 underground in Iceland since 2012 using proprietary technology. Carbfix injects CO2 dissolved in water into basaltic rocks, where it turns into stone in under two years through accelerated natural processes. This proven, safe, permanent, and cost-effective carbon storage solution is ripe for significant upscaling both in Iceland and worldwide. For more information, please visit carbfix.com.
